Understanding Dengue:

What You Need To Know

Dengue is a sickness caused by a virus. You get it from the bite of an infected mosquito, called the Aedes aegypti mosquito. It is important to know you can’t catch dengue directly from another person.

These mosquitoes are sneaky! They are small, dark and have white stripes. They love to breed in clean, stagnant water, even just a little bit! Think old tires, flower pots, or forgotten pails. They also bite mostly during the day, in the early mornings and late afternoons.

Watch out for sudden high fever (lasting from 2 to 7 days), severe headache (especially behind the eyes), muscle and joint aches, skin rash, nausea, and vomiting. If you experience these, seek medical attention promptly.

Here is the 5S strategy to fight against dengue!

The best way to fight dengue is to stop mosquitoes from breeding and biting. Here’s how:

Search and Destroy

Regularly check and get rid of any standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs. Empty water containers, throw away trash like old cans and bottles.

Self-protection

Keep yourself and your family safe from bites. Use mosquito repellent (such as OFF!®), wear long sleeves and pants. And have insect sprays or coils (such as Baygon®) at the ready at home.

Seek early consultation

If you feel sick with a high fever, headache or body aches, see a doctor immediately.

Say yes to fogging

(when needed)
Support community fogging if your local health officials say it’s necessary for your area.

Sustaining Hydration

Keep your mind and body focused by drinking water consistently, as plenty of fluids is vital to prevent dehydration, especially during dengue fever.
